All You Need to Know About Shrimp
My daughter Jessica’s favorite food to eat is Shrimp. She can eat Shrimp twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, if I would let her. We live in Charleston, South Carolina so we are fortunate enough to be able to go shrimping any time we want. The first time I took Jessica shrimping is a very amusing story. She was only five at the time and we went out to our favorite spot and dropped our net. After a while we brought up the net and she was so eager to see inside that she almost fell in the water. I was struggling to get the net up; I had one hand on the rope and the other hand on her shirt pulling her back. When she finally settled down I could pull the net in. She looked in and saw for the first what real live shrimp looked like, and she started screaming, “Mommy, Mommy, what is that!” I told her it was a shrimp and she said, “No it’s not, that’s not a Shrimp! It has eyes and lots of things sticking out of its head.” We all just died laughing. I tried to convince her for several hours that day, and all the way home, but she was not going to change her mind. When we got home and she help me in the kitchen to prepare and cook the shrimp, it finally sunk in that they really were they same shrimp that she loves to eat.
Now, she is fourteen and we decided to create this web site so that we can let other people who have probably only seen shrimp in their local supermarkets, know what a shrimp really looks like, where they come from, and how you prepare and cook them. We are also including some of are favorite family recipes and some cooking tips on how to prepare and cook shrimp.
Let me tell you, Jessica is not the only one who likes Shrimp, because they have become the most popular seafood in the United States today, and Americans consume more shrimp than any other country in the world. Shrimp fall into three basic groups: warm water shrimp, freshwater shrimp, and cold water shrimp and there are three main species of shrimp – white, pink, and brown. More then half the shrimp we purchase from our local stores come from shrimp “farms” in Asia and South America. The rest are "wild caught" by fishermen in the southeastern part of the United States and the Gulf of Mexico, or from Latin America and the Caribbean.
